Fix Local Jekyll build after ruby update from 2.7 to 3.0

Problem Statement

I use Github Pages to host my blog. The Github Pages use Jekyllto generate the blog. Jekyll is a static site generator, given the markdown files it will convert them into html files. One of the prerequisite for Jekyll is Ruby.

Recently, local build of my Jekyll generated blog started failing with error -

  harsha-kadekar.github.io git:(master) ✗ bundle exec jekyll serve
/usr/bin/env: ‘ruby2.7’: No such file or directory

Fix

  • Re-install bundle and jekyll using command gem install jekyll bundler
  • Add webrick using command bundle add webrick
  • Fix pathutil by adding this in the Gemfile gem "pathutil", github: "sdogruyol/pathutil", ref: '6ab144a7706c2bc5fa0dfdfa498e94ff66e944c6'
  • If you use theme no-style-please , then make sure you have installed jekyll 3.9 by using command gem install jekyll -v 3.9.0
  • Re-install ffi using gem install ffi

Debug

My initial thought was ruby runtime might have got uninstalled in my laptop. To verify this hypothesis, ran this command -

  harsha-kadekar.github.io git:(master) ✗ ruby -v
ruby 3.0.2p107 (2021-07-07 revision 0db68f0233) [x86_64-linux-gnu]

So ruby still exists but the version is 3.0 instead of 2.7. So, now the problem statement got updated in my mind - due to update of ruby from version 2.7 to version 3.0 in my laptop, jekyll execution in the system started failing. I thought the issue was in bundle itself, so as a first step, verified that bundle loading as expected.

As a fix, tried to re-install bundler and jekyll.

Once this was validated, tried to re-run jekyll static site generator. It failed again with a different error -

I looked around the web and found these references. Even in jekyll documentation, it asked to add webrick if using ruby 3.0

I thought of verifying if something is wrong in the jekyll itself. So, tried to check the version jekyll and it failed with an error

As a first step, uninstalled jekyll (this was unnecessary )

Because every version of no-style-please depends on jekyll ~> 3.9.0
  and jekyll ~> 3.9.0 could not be found in locally installed gems,
  no-style-please cannot be used.
So, because Gemfile depends on no-style-please >= 0,
  version solving has failed.

Decided to install 3.9 version of jekyll

  harsha-kadekar.github.io git:(master) gem install jekyll -v 3.9.0

On researching, found this reference -

Based on that suggestion, re-installed ffi
